Nothing is more important than keeping your children safe. Nothing is more important to a parent than keeping their children safe. The incredible growth of the Internet has excited businesses and consumers alike with its promise of changing the way we live and work. But a major concern has been just how secure the Internet is, particularly for our children. With this in mind Road Runner and Computer Associates are pleased to be able to offer you free of charge RR Parental control, developed by PureSight, to make your child’s high speed internet experience safe and enjoyable. RR Parental Control is an application that installs on your PC where it can block or permit Internet traffic based on parameters that you control. • Parental Control allows you to restrict access to specific web pages or entire categories of web pages (e.g., Adult, Weapons, Drugs, etc.) using an innovative multilayer filtering approach including: • URL Database – black list of sites classified by category using two established content rating systems. • Personalization - Local, customized lists of forbidden/allowed sites related to specific Internet access policy set by the users. while also allowing you to limit when and how long your kids can surf the Internet. • ACR™ (Active Content Recognition for “On the Fly filtering” of all requested pages based on advanced content recognition technology. For example, ACR™ recognizes different parameters and takes into account the words used and the basic layout and format of the page. For example, pornography pages typically have very similar characteristics -- explicit words, a large number of graphics, dark backgrounds, large fonts, etc. In contrast, educational sites containing information about sex typically contain extensive texts, formal language, light backgrounds, simple fonts and few graphics. These differences enable ACR™ to distinguish between the two very different categories of content. • Classification cache – a local cache of previously classified URLs for network performance enhancement. In the event that the RR Parental Control application does not block a site that you would like to restrict, you can manually configure the program to block that site in the future. Similarly, if PureSight blocks a site that you feel is appropriate for your family, you can manually allow access to that site. • RR Parental Control tracks web site activity for all users except the Administrator profile. It will tell you what sites were accessed, which ones were blocked, and how many times each site was accessed. • With individual profiles for each family member, you can also specify when kids can surf the internet or limit their web usage to a preset number of hours. This will allow the administrator to customize the profiles to suite the requirements for individual users. A teenager will no doubt have different internet access requirements than say a young child. You can sign up and download the FREE RR Parental Control software from the RR Security section of our web site. Road Runner Security Website Once you have registered using a valid RR email account, you will receive an email with simple instructions on how to download the program. Rules of Safety While this software is incredibly helpful in creating a safe internet environment for your children, it is not a substitute for a responsible safety plan. Much like you would review a emergency fire escape plan, take the time to sit with your children and make them aware of rules that you as a parent deem appropriate. Below are some suggestions to guide you in this effort. • Never give out identifying information – home address, telephone number or school name. • Think carefully before revealing any personal information about you or your family, such as age, marital status or financial information. • Instruct your child not to click on any links that are contained in e-mail from persons they don't know. • Never allow a child to arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they meet online without parental permission. • Remember that people online may not be who they seem. Because you can't see or even hear the person it is easy for someone to misrepresent him or herself. Therefore, someone indicating that "she" is a "12-year-old girl" could in reality be a 40-year-old man. Always be aware of the dangers. • Be sure to make this a family activity. Consider keeping the computer in a family room rather than the child's bedroom. Get to know their "online friends" just as you would get to know all of their other friends. The internet can be a fun and exciting environment for your children to learn and play in, with the proper guidance. RR offers a “ Kid Stuff “ page. This page provides a excellent source for entertaining news and activities for your child. RR Kids Stuff Website Please keep in mind, it is wise to visit all websites that your children frequent. This allows you to be sure that it is acceptable for viewing.
